Hello Iowa City AAUW Friends!

We continue to cooperate with like-minded organization to co-sponsor community events which fit our AAUW mission. We are one of 5 sponsors of the film Miss Representation to be presented as part of the Landlocked Film Festival during the last weekend of August. The poster doesn't upload well, so below are the particulars. Check out the post below this one regarding the Landlocked Film Festival opening night invitation.

The opening film is

COUNTRY SCHOOL: ONE ROOM – ONE NATION

Country schools took rough-hewn pioneers and multilingual immigrants and transformed them into

a literate and patriotic new nation. From the first schools in new states to the demise of their

widespread use in the 1950s and 1960s, this documentary takes viewers "back to school" for a

dramatic new look at the lasting impact of America's one-room schools.

Kelly and Tammy Rundle (director and producer of Country School: One Room - One Nation as

well as Landlocked 2008’s Lost Nation: The Ioway) will be present at the reception together with

other filmmakers and members of the Landlocked Film Festival Board to answer questions.

Professor Elizabeth Swain, who attended a one-room school, will be on hand to share her

experience, as we hope other guests will do if they have similar experiences to relate. Following the

reception, Country School: One Room - One Nation will screen in the Englert at 7:00 pm.

"An Iranian Woman's View of Her World"

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, IC AAUW will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Coralville Public Library.

Leila Welch, an Iranian woman married to a U.S. citizen, will be the featured speaker. Leila grew up in Iran and has recently returned from a visit there. She travels to Iowa City to attend school and will share her experiences and observations about Iran today.

The meeting is open to the public.

AAUW supports 50-50 in 2020

Iowa has never had a woman senator or representative in Washington, D.C. Iowa has never had a woman governor. 50-50 in 2020 is a new bipartisan initiative to identify and help train women to run for public office.

A news conference to explain 50-50 in 2020 was held Wed., Sept. 22, at 3:30 p.m. in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol on the official kick-off day of the initiative.

The local, state, and national AAUW organization supports this initiative. Iowa City AAUW member, Jean Lloyd-Jones (D), is one of the originators in partnership with Maggie Tinsman (R). News links to the state-wide news conferences can be found at:

Parents, Teachers, Coaches, Leaders of Girls, Older Girls, Women, Men!

Is "hot" the prevailing desired image of girlhood these days? What messages are girls and all of us receiving through advertising, clothing choices, cartoons, TV dramas? How can young people find their way through the maze of media images to become healthy, caring and real human beings?

The book, The Lolita Effect, by M. Gigi Durham, not only illuminates media image influences in our culture, but also suggests discussion starters that will help young people discern how they can be manipulated.

Welcome to our Iowa City AAUW blogspot!

The American Association of University Women (www.aauw.org) is a long-time national organization with the purpose of:
Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

The Iowa City branch is a small group trying to re-create who we are and what we do to support that purpose in today's world. Being research-oriented we decided to research women's groups in the Iowa City area who have similar objectives. To that end, we sponsored FORUM I in October, 2008 with representatives from 3 other local groups invited to join the panel.

AAUW continues in Iowa City! The vote at our April 25, 2009, meeting was to work on revitalization of the Iowa City branch. And it's happening! We are networking with other organizations with similar goals for girls and women.
